Get The Ball Drill

The “Get The Ball Drill” can be done as a one-on-one, two-on-one, three-on-two or two-on-two drill. In theory, you are only limited by imagination. Safety needs to be a priority.

  • This drill involves one or more players involved in the process of recovering the ball.
  • Reacting to an opponent and trying to use body position to get the ball.
  • Knowing when to block, screen, shield or tackle an opponent to keep them from the ball and allow your teammate to make the recovery.
  • Learning to look for and block the most dangerous man during a loose ball.

A player or coach will roll the ball between two defenders or sets of defenders. The job of each is to recover the football. This gives each group a chance to work together to get the ball. By doing this drill, I’ve seen more “team recoveries” and fewer situations where two teammates go for the ball and miss; crack each other in the open field; or causing injury both with and without an opponent’s threat.

An important key is recognizing same jersey color (we will use target vests), ball rotation, speed, direction, surroundings, open field, pile, sideline, teammates and opponents. When we do this, each position competes against itself.

One-on-one – Is done by body positioning for the ball. Groups of three work well because the third man can roll the fumble.

Two-on-one – Two defenders versus the one who fumbled. The two work together to screen, block or shield the offensive man from the ball while the other recovers it. The three-on-two, and two-on- two situations are a similar variation of the two-on-two drill.
