Our offensive line is extremely focused, because our linemen know exactly what is expected of them. The following six maxims of offensive line play guide our linemen to be the best unit possible.
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #1 – BE VIOLENT
Impose your will on your opponent. O-Line play is not a passive activity. We are not and will never be, “shielders.” It will be our goal to PUNISH every play. We will take the fight to the defense.
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #2 – BE SMART
Quite simply, offensive line play is a game of angles and leverage. We win by not allowing the defenders to get where they want to go. This is facilitated by attaining a thorough understanding of the concept of each play, possessing a working knowledge of the intricacies of the different defensive fronts, and having an overall awareness for things that can be manipulated to create the best opportunity for success (steps, splits, etc.).
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #3 – BE TOUGH
Both mentally and physically. Offensive line play, as stated before, is a very violent, physical act. Bumps, bruises, and other injuries are almost a certainty. OVERCOME what can be. Defeat IS a certainty. You will bust an assignment, miss a block, or give up a sack at some point in your career. What you do at that point is a test of your character. Never accept defeat, but do not dwell on a defeat. Play the next play. We, as a unit, will strive to ensure that our opponent thinks more about their safety and well-being than we do, and constantly must deal with overcoming defeat and adversity.
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #4 – BE BUSY AND FIND WORK
Search for a way to assert yourself on the defense every snap.
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #5 – BE SOUND
In assignment and technique.
OFFENSIVE LINE MAXIM #6 – BE TOGETHER
Communicate with, encourage and FIGHT alongside your fellow offensive linemen. If one is defeated. ALL are defeated. Our ability to work together will contribute our offensive and, consequently our team success; No other position group has an influence on the game that WE do. WE are the only group big enough for the challenge. We are always up for a challenge.
